It’s a funny old world…

September 16th, 2006 by Marie

We (Paul and I) had the slightly weird experience on Thursday of travelling to Derby to be interviewed for Radio 2 about FantasyCon. Joining us in the interview were Mark Chadbourn, whose latest book is Jack of Ravens, and Juliet E McKenna, whose latest book is Eastern Tide. We got there, were installed in a studio and much genre chat ensued - great fun if slightly surreal. It’ll be interesting to see how much - if any - of what we said actually makes it into the eight minute slot allocated on Friday 22nd September, sometime between 10pm and midnight. I’ll have to get one of the kids to tape it, as we’ll be at FantasyCon by then.

FantasyCon grows ever closer, there are now 5 days to go, and things are getting even more hectic! Jen’s running around like a headless chicken, and doing a great job of getting everything together that needs to be brought along - such as members’ copies of Cinema Macabre and BFS: A Celebration, and the much anticipated FantasyCon booklet that has original, exclusive cover art by Clive Barker. We’re very grateful to Clive for allowing us to use this, and there’s also an interview with Clive and the other GOH inside the booklet. It’s going to be a good one :)

There are some interesting possibilities on the writing front, but they’re a bit too nebulous to talk about at the minute, so more shortly…. must go, have to wrest Paul’s new toy away from him (digicam). Honestly, some men shouldn’t be allowed gadgets…

Is that for the Weekender show, Marie? Rhys H was interviewed awhile back about Flann O’Brian and “Lost” - the DJ gave a plug. :)

  2. Marie Says:

Yep, it is, Chris. It’ll be interesting to see what actually goes out. I’ve got my son Peter taping it for me - let’s face it, we’ll be in the bar at FCON by then:)

  3. Jen Says:

Ooh, what’s on Friday night around then? Ah, it’s the Ramsey interview and JLP reading… we sooo need to find a radio so that thems not attending that can listen in… :)

Hope the Fcon mag works out ok… hope it comes back from the printers in time… hope my sanity stays intact…. :) Quite proud of it. (Though a couple of days after sending it off, I spotted something I wish I’d put in (missed out a bibliog for one of the guests… agh! Poor Ray!)

Did you get to hang out much with Mark & Juliet after the interview?

  4. Christopher Teague Says:

Yeah, have to get a radio set up somewhere… p’haps a live-link up on Friday with the DJ - could be interesting! :)

    Oh, and calm down Jen!

  5. Marie Says:

A radio?! Eek! Mark had to rush off, Jen, but Paul, Juliet and I ended up having a pub lunch before Jules had to rush off to Oxford and we had to head home.

Jen, repeat after me - it’ll be fine. It’ll be fine. Repeat as necessary :)

  6. Jen Says:

It’ll be fine… it’ll be fine… I’m perfectly calm… except apparently they’re trying to deliver the Fcon mag to your old gaff in Finchley… I don’t know either :o

  7. Marie Says:

Eh? It’s been over a year since I left London, and I can’t remember the last time they delivered to me rather than you anyway! Grr. Sorry, Jen, hope you get them tomorrow…what’s the betting they’ll blame a computer?

  8. Jen Says:

Got ‘em. (Insert clip of mad dancing) Just in the nick. I’m off now… manana!! :)

  9. Marie Says:

Thank God for that! :) Thanks Jen, see you tomorrow! Oh, and the Radio 2 coverage is now almost ten minutes out of that slot, so it’ll be interesting to see what made the cut :)

  10. Jen Says:

You got about 12 minutes! It was on at 11.20pm ish on Friday - Plugging Fcon, with you, Paul, Juliet, Neil & Mark talking very intelligently about Fcon and genre bits, with short reading of each of your work (interspersed with some odd music snatches between each one…)

  11. Marie Says:

We sounded intelligent? :) I heard it when I got home, Joe had taped it for me, luckily. Although both my boys say it didn’t sound like me :) Came out quite well, I thought…Chris Fowler was on it as well, but they didn’t read an excerpt of his.
